Driver Training Study: Volume I

Download PDF (4.8 MB)

The Driver Training Study: Volume I is the first product of POST’s Vehicle Operations Training Advisory Council (VOTAC) — a broad cross-section of stakeholders. The VOTAC was formed early in 2008 as part of POST’s initiative to improve driver training and reduce on-duty traffic collisions (specifically career-ending and fatal injury collisions).

The Driver Training Study: Volume I is responsive to POST Strategic Plan Objective B.10, “Enhance and continue the study of driver training methods and vehicle-related high-risk activities to improve training, enhance safety, and reduce preventable collisions and injuries. ” It provides detailed information and analysis that includes:

  • Peace officer injury and fatal collision rates and causes in California and nationally;
  • Current practices and capabilities of California driver training presenters and an overview of programs offered in other states and countries;
  • A study of the correlation between training and collisions;
  • Costs of driver training;
  • Findings, recommendations, and best practices for driver training; and
  • Related references and resources.

The VOTAC endorsed this publication and the first set of findings produced by the study. The report was presented to the Commission at its October 2008 meeting, at which time it was approved.  The Driver Training Study and the involvement of the VOTAC are ongoing and subsequent volumes will be developed.
