Applied Psychology in Criminal Justice is an open access journal from the Criminal Justice Center of Sam Houston University. It is an interdisciplinary, peer-reviewed, academic journal that examines the intersection of applied and social psychology with criminal justice. Full text online: 2005 to present.

Criminal Justice Ethics is a publication of John Jay College of Criminal Justice. Its scope includes topics relating to the police, the courts, corrections, and issues in legal philosophy. Full text is available from 1997 forward.

Criminology and Criminology and Public Policy are publications of the American Society of Criminology. Full text online: 1997 to present. 

Domestic Violence Report, a publication of the Civic Research Institute. Full text online: 2010 to present.

Homicide Studies bridges the gap between academic and practitioner with high quality, multidisciplinary articles devoted to research in public policy and applied knowledge related to the study of homicide. Holdings at POST: 2011 to present. Full text online: 1999 to present. 

Journal of Contemporary Criminal Justice provides authoritative, balanced examinations on a variety of critical issues in criminal justice today including: organized crime, community policing, gangs, white-collar crime, and excessive police force. Journal of Criminal Justice is an international journal intended to fill the need for the dissemination of new information, ideas and methods, to both practitioners and academicians in the criminal justice area. Although materials are presented relating to crime and the individual elements of the criminal justice system, the emphasis of the Journal is to tie together the functioning of these elements and to illustrate the effects of their interactions. January/February 2005 to present.

Journal of Police and Criminal Psychology, published on behalf of the Society for Police and Criminal Psychology, presents peer-reviewed reports, research findings, and papers on police psychology including personnel assessment, therapeutic methods, training, ethics and effective organizational operation. National Institute of Justice Journal features articles to help criminal justice policymakers and practitioners stay informed about new developments. The NIJ Journal presents research-based information that can help inform policy decisions and improve understanding of the criminal justice system.

Translational Criminology, produced by George Mason University's Center for Evidence-based Crime Policy, illustrates examples of how research is converted into criminal justice practice.

Dispatchers, First Responders

9-1-1 Magazine, an e-zine for first responders, is now online only.

EMS World covers practical aspects for emergency medical responders.  Holdings at POST: 1998 to present. Full text online: 2003 to present.

JEMS: Journal of Emergency Medical Services, an online journal for emergency technicians, covers many aspects of the dispatch function.

Fitness and Health

Exercise, Sports and Sports Medicine Standards and Malpractice Reporter covers the professional and legal aspects of exercise programs; stress testing; pre-participation screening; exercise injuries and liability; emergency responses; personal training and nutrition; wellness and health; and many other current topics. This is a combination and continuation of three newsletters: Exercise Standards and Malpractice Reporter, Sports Parks and Recreation Law Reporter, and Sports Medicine Standards and Malpractice Reporter.  Holdings at POST start with v.1 #1, January 2012 to present.  Email only, with print-outs in library.

Running and Fitnews  is a publication of the American Running and Fitness Association.  Holdings at POST: 1995 to present. Full text online: 2002 to present.

Training and Conditioning covers training, fitness, and injury in sports professionals. Holdings at POST: 2002 to present. Full text online: 2005 to present.

UC Berkeley Wellness Letter relies on the expertise of the School of Public Health and other researchers at UC Berkeley, as well as other top scientists from around the world. It translates this leading-edge research into practical advice for daily living. Holdings at POST: 3 years plus current. Password for electronic issues changes monthly and is in each paper issue.

National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) Journals:

Strength and Conditioning Journal publishes articles that report both the practical applications of research findings and the knowledge gained by experienced strength coaches, athletic trainers, and fitness health professionals.

Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research is NSCA's scientific journal.

NSCA Performance Training Journal is online-only publication that provides informative strength and conditioning topics based on sound research and practical application. 

Tactical Strength and Conditioning Report features research-based articles on exercise recommendations for correctional officers, firefighter fitness programs, training for SWAT school, and functional movement screening for tactical athletes.

Forensics, Evidence, and Crime Scene

Evidence Technology Magazine: Besides evidence collection, processing and preservation, this trade magazine covers fingerprint technology, crime-scene safety, computer forensics, forensic DNA, firearm and tool-mark examination, recovering human remains and more. Holdings at POST: 2007 to present. Digital editions online.

Evidence Log is a publication of the International Association for Property and Evidence. Holdings at POST: 2009 to present.

Forensic Examiner is the official peer-reviewed journal of the American College of Forensic Examiners Institute.  Articles from the current year are not released in full text (titles and abstracts are viewable).  Aside from the current year, online full text is available from 1992 forward.  Some archived issues are also available on the Forensic Examiner Website.  Holdings at POST: 2013 forward.

Forensics Technology Review is a single on-going issue (searchable) that covers the latest technologies, equipment, and services available to forensic investigation teams worldwide. Updated on a regular basis.  You can register to get updates when new content is added. Open access.

Homeland Security

The Economist -The Economist is a premier news magazine covering world politics, business and events. It is a good source of information on terrorism around the globe. Be sure to check out the special reports. Full text online from 1990 to the present; current year in POST Library.

Homeland Security Affairs is the peer-reviewed online journal of the Naval Postgraduate School Center for Homeland Defense and Security(CHDS) in Monterey, California.  It provides a forum to propose and debate strategies, policies, and organizational arrangements to strengthen U.S. homeland security.

Homeland Security Digital Library is produced by the Naval Post-graduate School of Homeland Defense and Security--"Securing the Homeland Through the Power of Information".

Homeland Security News Wire is the homeland security industry's largest daily news publication online, providing news, analysis and insight, along with information on breaking stories.

Journal of Counterterrorism and Homeland Security International is a publication of the International Association of Conterterrorism and Security Professionals (IACSP).  Holdings at POST: 2004 to present.

Journal of Homeland Security Education (JHSE) is a refereed professional electronic journal focused on Homeland Security education practice. The JHSE, an open source journal, provides an environment for discussing issues relevant to homeland security pedagogy/andragogy from the associate to doctoral degree level.

Police and Security News (P & SN) is described as "The information source for Law Enforcement and Homeland Security". Holdings at POST: Current 3 years.

Employee Relations Law Journal covers the law, how the courts are ruling, and what to do to comply. Performance Improvement Quarterly (PIQ) is a peer-reviewed journal published by the International Society for Performance Improvement. The emphasis is on human performance technologies such as front-end analysis or evaluation. Personnel Psychology covers research on: job analysis, selection and recruiting, training and development, performance appraisal and feedback, compensation and rewards, careers, strategic human resource management, work design, global and cross-cultural issues, organizational climate, work attitudes and behaviors, motivation, teams, and leadership. Training Magazine covers HR issues such as recruitment and retention, and training issues such as learning theory, on-the-job skills assessments and aligning core workforce competencies to enhance the bottom line. American Cop is a trade magazine dealing for the most part with technology and equipment for policing.  Holdings at POST: 2005 to present.

American Police Beat is a national tabloid of policing that bills itself "The Voice of the Nation's Law Enforcement Community." Holdings at POST: Current year.

Applied Psychology in Criminal Justice, a publication of Sam Houston State University, is an interdisciplinary, peer-reviewed, academic journal that examines the intersection of applied and social psychology with criminal justice. Open access.

BackUp, the official publication of the California Reserve Peace Officers' Association (CRPOA), is now available online only.

CALEA E-communique is an email newsletter replacing CALEA Update as the official publication of the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies.

California Peace Officer Magazine is a publication of the California Peace Officers' Association. Holdings at POST: 1980 to 1995; 2008 to present.

California Sheriff Magazine is a publication of the California State Sheriffs' Association. It provides up-to-date legislative news and CSSA’s positions on legislation, insights into legal cases and issues, local Sheriff Office programs and happenings, and community safety tips. Campus Law Enforcement Journal is the publication of the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators (IACLEA). Holdings at POST: September-October 1990 to present.

Campus Safety Journal covers issues and technology for security police and administrators. Holdings at POST: 2004 to present. 

CPOLS: California Police Officers' Legal Sourcebook is an online legal resource of current California regulations pertaining to police officers. FBI Law Enforcement Bulletin is published monthly by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and is especially strong in the areas of training, ethics, and professionalism for law enforcement. Holdings at POST: 1960 to present.

FLETC Journal is a publication of the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center. Holdings at POST: Spring 2008 to present.

The Gazette (Royal Canadian Mounted Police) is a premier quarterly law enforcement magazine that covers police operations, strategy, and training. There is excellent coverage of issues: gangs, drug trafficking, advances in forensics, and more. Holdings at POST: 1999 to present.

International Journal of Police Science and Management draws from practitioners and academics for a cross-disciplinary approach addressing police operational techniques, crime pattern analysis, crime investigation management, accountability, performance measurement, interagency cooperation and more.  Holdings at POST: 2011-present. Journal of California Law Enforcement is a publication of the California Peace Officers Association (CPOA). Many POST Command College students have published in this journal, which is not available online without membership. Holdings at POST: 1966 to present.

Journal of Police and Criminal Psychology presents peer-reviewed reports and research findings covering the theory, practice and application of psychological principles in criminal justice, particularly law enforcement, courts, and corrections. Journal of Police Crisis Negotiations covers all kinds of crisis negotiations from domestic violence to terrorism.  Also discusses methods of crisis communications, such as texting.  Full text online: 2001 to present with 18-month embargo.

Law and Order, "The Magazine for Police Management". Holdings at POST: 1957 to present.

Law Enforcement Legal Reporter is a monthly email publication summarizing the latest criminal case decisions of the United States Supreme Court, the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, the California Supreme Court and California Courts of Appeal, and applies these case decisions to the daily activities of street-level peace officers and detectives. Law Enforcement Legal Review evaluates cases involving law enforcement from the weekly editions of the Criminal Law Reporter, U.S. Law Week, and the West Publishing Company regional reporters. Many cases reported are only a few weeks old. Holdings at POST: Current 2 years.

Law Officer Magazine: Tactics, Technology Training is a trade magazine that covers the practical aspects of law enforcement. It is a good resource for police equipment and training. Holdings at POST: July/August 1987 to present. Online Coverage: 2005 to present.

The Law Officers' Bulletin summarizes recent decisions from local, state, and federal courts that affect law enforcement. Articles are written in plain language, and contain clear discussions of variances in the way issues are treated in different courts, avoiding legal terminology. Holdings at POST: Current 3 years.

National Institute of Justice Journal presents research-based information that can help inform policy decisions and improve understanding of the criminal justice system. Issues in law enforcement and homeland security are also discussed. Open access.

Educational Measurement: Issues and Practice is published by the National Council on Measurement in Education. The term "educational measurement" is used here in a very broad sense, and can refer to both inferences made and actions taken on the basis of test scores or other modes of assessment. Educational Technology Research and Development, published by the Association for Educational Communications and Technology, is the only scholarly journal in the field focusing entirely on research and development in educational technology. Educause Quarterly. EQ is an online, peer-reviewed, practitioner's journal from EDUCAUSE about managing and using information resources in higher education. This website focuses on "new learning" and the future of higher education.

IACP Training Keys are concise, authoritative sources of law enforcement training information covering a broad variety of police practices and procedures. Each Training Key is prepared by a leading expert and addresses an issue of particular interest to line officers and their supervisors. Check the index for topics; paper copies reside in library.

Infoline, a publication of the American Society of Training and Development (ASTD), is a how-to training resource on a variety of topics from design and delivery, to e-learning, to human capital, to business skills and more. Journal of Applied Learning Technology  JALT is a quarterly online publication sponsored by the Society for Applied Learning Technology and published by Learning Technology Institute. Legal and Regulatory Publications

Barclays Official California Code of Regulations, Title 5 Education: This two volume set covers California regulations on all levels of education, including testing and assessment of students.  It includes regulations covering Community Colleges, which are the major venue for law enforcement training in the Basic Course.  Volumes are in the Library and are updated regularly.

CPOLS: California Police Officers' Legal Sourcebook is an online legal resource of current California regulations pertaining to police officers. Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology, one of the most widely circulated law journals in the country, strives to publish the best scholarship on these topics for legal academics, as well as practitioners, criminologists, and police officers. West's California Legislative Service documents the path of legislation before it becomes codified in law in the California Code of Regulations. Print copies reside in the library.

Rand State Statistics is a subscription-based service sponsored by Rand, the nation's leading think tank. It contains nearly 200 social science databases, and includes detailed demographic information on all 50 states. It includes all of the data in Rand California, much of which is available at the national, state, county, and city levels.
