Public Safety Dispatcher Instructor Development Course
POST has developed a specialized dispatcher-centered instructor development course which is designed to blend an Instructor Development Institute (IDI)–compatible Basic Course with the development of mini-course (four- to eight-hour) instructional packages which can be used for the delivery of in-service Continuing Professional Training (CPT) courses to communications personnel. This instructor development program also fully satisfies the prevailing POST Academy Instructor Certification Course (AICC) standards for individuals who may be teaching subjects such as information systems within a regular peace officer basic course.
The program is presented only twice per year, switching between Northern and Southern California venues. The course is structured into two distinct parts: a 40-hour initial week, followed four to six weeks later by a two-day session which encapsulates lesson planning and instructional resource development with individual instructional competency verifications. Participants work as part of a six-person team and will be assigned to a topical area which meets an expressed in-service training need. Participants are asked to prioritize their topic preferences on the course enrollment form.
Because this course goes beyond the scope of a traditional instructor development course and involves the creation of generic, communications-relevant instructional packages, participants are individually eligible for travel and per diem reimbursement directly by the Letter of Agreement (LOA) process in addition to the option for reimbursement directly to employing agencies through the conventional Training Reimbursement Request (TRR) process under Plan IV. There is no tuition or fees for this class. Additional travel information will be provided to participants upon confirmation of enrollment.
Enrollees should take note of the fact that a modest amount of out-of-class work is expected and that graduates may be invited to participate as an assisting instructor in a pilot offering of their course sometime in the future.
