POST Training Videos FAQs
California POST delivers high-quality, in-service and specialized training videos to law enforcement agencies in the California POST program. POST training videos are designed to assist law enforcement training managers and instructors in meeting specific training needs or legislative mandates for their agency. Long-form POST-certified videos are divided into short, roll-call length sections that may be presented over multiple training sessions for Continuing Professional Training (CPT) credit.
Transitioning from DVD to Online Streaming Video
POST is converting its training video collection from DVD disc to online streaming on the POST Learning Portal, beginning with online conversion of 50 of the more recent titles released between 2012-2019. All future (new) videos will be released online as streaming videos. POST will complete transition of select previous DVD videos to the Learning Portal in early 2020 and will discontinue the DVD disc format later in 2020. Limited quantities of previously released videos on DVD will be available to agencies by mail while supplies last (see ordering information below).
POST has several new videos planned for release in 2020 (final video titles and release dates to be determined):
- Bias and Racial Profiling
- Human Trafficking
- De-escalation Techniques
- Officer Wellness
- Mental Health
- Initial Response to Natural Disasters
- Domestic Violence Update and GVROs
- Next Generation Dispatching
- Did You Know? series: Human Trafficking; Hate Crimes; Officer Wellness; GVROs
Finding and Ordering Previous Videos
POST has discontinued use of an online video catalog for ordering DVDs by mail. Using the online POST Multimedia Course Catalog or POST Training Video Program Guides, agency training managers or supervisors may search for previously released DVD videos and then must complete and submit the Training Video Program Order form. DVD videos are free of charge for POST agencies and are shipped via USPS to training managers or supervisors at agencies in the POST Program (it takes approximately 5-7 business days for DVD delivery). DVD quantities are limited and only those videos appearing in the website listings above are available.
Video Distribution and Shipping (DVDs)
DVD video order forms are screened and processed by POST, and then fulfilled and shipped from POST’s video production and distribution facility in Carlsbad, CA. POST does not directly distribute video orders from its West Sacramento headquarters and does not take video orders via phone nor email. Agencies seeking POST DVDs by mail must return the completed order form to POST. POST videos are available for staff training at government law enforcement agencies only.
New Training Video Releases
When POST produces new training videos (new titles released in early 2020) they will be uploaded as streaming videos to the POST Learning Portal and will NOT be automatically sent by mail to POST agencies. New titles will be released about every 30-60 days. Limited quantities of DVD versions of new training videos will be available to agencies by mail while supplies last in 2020, but agencies are encouraged to access new videos online at the POST Learning Portal instead of using DVDs.
Video Program Guides
All POST training videos feature a companion Program Guide. This single-page PDF document provides the presenter with a summary of the program and shows the video segments and other contents. Notations about the release date, ID number, CPT credit, viewing options, and other video program information are also included.
Other Guides or Supplemental Print Materials
Most POST Training Videos produced after July 2012 feature printable facilitator and trainee documents. These “Facilitation Guide” and “Student Study Guide” documents are for instructor use only and are available only on the original DVD disc or to agency training managers via the POST Learning Portal.
Enhanced Training Video Format (July 2012 and later, DVD and online).
The newer generation of POST training videos were redesigned to provide enhanced functionality and options for facilitators and individual trainees that include set-up questions, sample facilitation sessions/demonstrations, and interviews with subject matter resources that clarify and reiterate important teaching points. Two viewing modes are now offered: “Facilitated Group Course” or “Informational/Individual Viewing.” Additional "how to" instructions for facilitation and obtaining CPT credit are included on the DVD and the Learning Portal streaming versions.
Special “Did You Know?” Informational Videos
The Did You Know? video series features short, high-impact vignettes that inform and remind officers to always be vigilant in the delivery of exceptional police services while ensuring safety for themselves, their peers, and the citizens they serve. These dynamic and engaging videos are perfect for roll call and other briefing or training settings. The complete collection of videos may be viewed and downloaded from the POST Learning Portal.
VHS vs. DVD Video Formats
Most previously released training videos from POST are on DVD disc format (up through 2019). Any POST videos on VHS videotape format should be immediately removed from agency training libraries and a confidential destruction of the videotape should be done. All VHS format videos from POST are more than 15 years old and are discontinued.
Check Video Status Prior to Training Use
Agency training managers who wish to present POST training videos for CPT credit or to satisfy mandated training requirements must always check the POST Course Catalog and/or EDI to ensure that the training video is still certified for use and is listed. Videos that have been discontinued are removed from the POST Course Catalog, removed from the Program Guides, and removed from the POST Learning Portal.
Questions About Video Presentations, Documentation, and CPT Credit
Check with your POST Regional Consultant for assistance with questions about satisfying training requirements and mandates using POST videos, training video presenter certification, the POST Course Catalog and EDI system, how to report training video CPT credit, etc. Presenters should document all POST training video completions via POST Course Rosters within the POST EDI system. NOTE: Training videos viewed online at the Learning Portal do not automatically receive CPT credit and a POST Course Roster must be submitted separately (same procedure as DVD viewing). View Instructions for Training Video Course Rosters (pdf).
