Course Description
This course provides comprehensive training on conducting psychological fitness-for-duty evaluations (FFDEs) of law enforcement personnel. Participants will learn the legal framework, evaluation methodology, psychological testing protocols, ethical standards, and special contexts that distinguish FFDEs from pre-employment screening evaluations.
Course Objectives
Identify the key legal frameworks that govern FFDEs for peace officers
Differentiate between pre-employment psychological evaluations and FFDEs in terms of purpose, scope, and methodology
Classify the behavioral triggers that warrant initiation of a FFDE using the positive and negative risk framework
Analyze the intersection of the Americans with Disabilities Act, Family and Medical Leave Act, and California Government Code requirements in FFDEs practice
Evaluate the ethical and competency standards required for psychologists conducting FFDEs
Assess the business necessity standard and direct threat provisions that legally justify mandatory FFDEs
Explain the dual protective function of FFDEs for both public safety and officer welfare
