Course Description

This course provides comprehensive training on conducting psychological fitness-for-duty evaluations (FFDEs) of law enforcement personnel. Participants will learn the legal framework, evaluation methodology, psychological testing protocols, ethical standards, and special contexts that distinguish FFDEs from pre-employment screening evaluations.

Course Objectives

Identify the key legal frameworks that govern FFDEs for peace officers

Differentiate between pre-employment psychological evaluations and FFDEs in terms of purpose, scope, and methodology

Classify the behavioral triggers that warrant initiation of a FFDE using the positive and negative risk framework

Analyze the intersection of the Americans with Disabilities Act, Family and Medical Leave Act, and California Government Code requirements in FFDEs practice

Evaluate the ethical and competency standards required for psychologists conducting FFDEs

Assess the business necessity standard and direct threat provisions that legally justify mandatory FFDEs

Explain the dual protective function of FFDEs for both public safety and officer welfare
