Course Description

This course fulfills annual requirements for police psychologists who conduct pre-employment psychological evaluations for law enforcement candidates. This course is intended to provide participants with the most up-to-date laws and best practices for screening potential peace officers. On the first day, the attendees will observe the training for law enforcement cadets and will participate in scenarios and other activities that demonstrate the demands of law enforcement officers, reflect the Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) psychological dimensions, and help identify personality traits that may lead to the determination of suitability. On the second day, attendees will learn about potential implicit bias and discuss biases in pre-employment psychological evaluations. They will learn about how to apply the employments laws regarding pre-employment screening, including ADA, FEHA, and EEOC. The attendees will also learn about Appeals and how to apply Government Code 1031(f) and the POST Psychological Dimensions regarding law enforcement candidates. Finally, the attendees will learn how to utilize test results when developing recommendations regarding suitability. Though this is a two-day training, attendees are allowed to attend either or both of the presentations.
