To date, medical marijuana use is legal in 37 states, while recreational use is legal in 11 states. As a result, there has been an increase in recreational marijuana use, as well as in the use of marijuana and CBD for pain management, anxiety and stress relieve, as well as PTSD treatment, and even though marijuana remains prohibited under federal law (i.e., it remains a Schedule I Drug under the Controlled Substances Act), police candidates are not an exception to this trend. This course provided an overview of the human endocannabinoid system and focused on how dysfunction of this system has significant implications for one’s emotional stability, mood dysregulation, and memory. It further focused on how the different methods of administration and dosing of THC/CBD affect the body differently, resulting in various degrees/duration of impairment. The course also focused on drug interactions between THC/CBD, and 11 major drug classes, including, but not limited to stimulants used to treat ADHD, SSRIs, tricyclics antidepressants, and benzodiazepines, which are commonly prescribed in the course of treatment of chronic pain, anxiety, depression, and PTSD. Additionally, this course provided an overview of the process of addiction, the evidence behind marijuana addiction, and the conditions under which marijuana use meets criteria for a substance use disorder as defined in the DSM-5, and focused on the positive and negative effects of cannabis products on mental health disorders such as anxiety, depression, cannabis induced psychosis, while specifically highlighting the effects of these products on young brains.
