Emerging Topics in Police and Public Safety Psychology

Course Objectives

PRESENTATION:  Changes in Public Safety Applicant Population Pre-and Post Floyd , Ryan Roberts, JD, PhD, Cerise Vablais, PhD, ABPP, and Mike Roberts, PhD, ABPP
  1. <Identify two agency challenges related to a lack of quality applicants
  2. <Describe the differences in applicant changes among different job classes.
  3.  List test constructs that have changed among law enforcement applicants between pre and post 2020.
PRESENTATION:  Sexual Misconduct In Correctional Facilities Ryan Roberts, JD, PhD and Mike Roberts, PhD, ABPP
  1. Identify which gender is more likely to commit sexual misconduct relative to the number employed.
  2. Describe how male and female perpetrators of sexual misconduct differ on the CPI and PAI tests.
  3. List factors that agencies believe contribute to sexual misconduct among corrections officers.
PRESENTATION:  Regulatory Risk and the Challenges Facing Us In the Post Floyd Era Cerise Vablais, PhD, ABPP
  1. Discuss the risk of regulatory legal changes made without expert consultation.
  2. Describe the potential areas of misinformation that legislators may encounter when drafting new laws.
PRESENTATION:  Psychologists and the Right to Bear Arms: Psychological Screening as a Requirement for Issuing a License to Citizen Who Want to Carry a Concealed Weapon in Public (CCW) Mike Roberts, PhD, ABPP
  1. Discuss the challenges faced by screening psychologists following the recent Supreme Court case.
  2. List 3 constructs typically assessed in CCW applicants that may no longer be permissible under current law
