Course Description

The demographics and cultural landscape of the United States is evolving, which invites questions regarding police and public safety (PPS) psychologists’ diversity, multiculturalism, and cultural competence in assessment practices. PPS psychologists are uniquely positioned to assess risk for bias and prejudice in law enforcement candidates, although little is known how—if at all—they do so. The current empirical study investigates: (1) the extent of self-reported diversity among a sample of psychologists specializing in PPS; (2) the extent of diversity they tend to encounter among police officer candidates; (3) PPS psychologists' reported culturally competent assessment practices (vs. more questionable practices); and (4) actual methods used to assess risk for bias and prejudice among candidates.
