Course Description
****This course is approved for 2 POST CPE credit hours.****
In this workshop, we will focus on how culture informs our individual and systemic approaches to forensic mental health assessments. We consider the concepts of bias and how it can shape our behavior in the evaluation process. Strategies for considering culture and varying identities at all stages of the evaluation are provided. We will discuss ethical principles and standards supporting this work. Additionally, we discuss ways to promote successful work with language interpreters. Finally, psychological testing with people of diverse backgrounds and identities is covered with a proposed model for approaching this work.
Course Objectives
Participants attending will be able to: 1. Illustrate cognitive processing and forms of bias that impact forensic mental health assessments, 2. Recognize how professional ethics and other guidance promote culturally-informed forensic mental health assessments; 3. Describe cultural expressions of psychopathology; 4. Identify professional resources and interview strategies that can facilitate understanding of an examinee's culture and heritage; 5. Enumerate strategies for working effectively with language interpreters; 6. Discuss how and when to write about a person's identity in forensic mental health evaluation; 7. Employ a model of considering how and when to use psychological testing with individuals with diverse identities.
