Course Description

This course is POST-approved for .25 CPE credit. Global mindedness (Hogan) is necessary for effectively navigating the proliferating challenges we face in the rapidly evolving international world of today. Nowhere is this more relevant than policing. As psychologists have aided in just about every evolution modern society has faced, public safety psychologists possess the foundational and functional knowledge and competencies best suited to support law enforcement meet the service needs of diverse communities across the continents. Examples of documented critical areas of need where public safety psychologists can help include recruitment and selection, training (bias mitigation, cross-cultural communications, de-escalation), officer wellness (addressing stress, anxiety, depression, suicide), threat assessment/management, program evaluation, public relations, and police monitoring and feedback systems. This presentation will be paneled by members of the IAPC PPSS Global Affairs Committee (GAC) who will provide illustrations of the major contemporary challenges to global communities and law enforcement and detail services aimed at addressing the essential issues mentioned above. The panel/committee will share their recent global psychological services needs survey and poll the audience for additional areas of critical need. Areas where further research and development are needed will be discussed.
