Course Description

Telemedicine, once an odd idea to most police chiefs, was normalized during the COVID-19 global pandemic. Prior to the pandemic, conducting pre-employment psychological evaluations of police officer candidates (hereafter PPE) via telehealth was only used by a few psychologists working in remote areas without competent local professionals for the work. During the pandemic, conducting PPE virtually was initially a necessity, but became common practice among police psychologists. This presentation will cover the advantages and disadvantages of virtual and in-person PPE as well as detail published research that demonstrates the equivalency of both methods of PPE. The IACP guidelines on PPE will also be discussed as they relate to this topic, and some myths about PPE will be debunked.
