Course Description

To provide background and develop competence to use the NEO Personality Inventory- 3 Forms S and R, and the NEO Inventories (NEO Personality Inventory-Revised (NEO-PI-R, NEO-FFI-3, Self-report form (Form S) and observer rating forms (Form R) in counseling, clinical and forensic psychology and psychiatry. Topics to be covered include a history of the Five-Factor Model of Personality (FFM) and the development and revisions to the NEO Personality Inventory Revised. Research highlights describing the construct and predictive validity of the NEO-PI-3 including behavior genetic support and the age, sex and cross-cultural universality for the NEO PI-3; Description of the NEO PI-3 test materials, administration and scoring and a detailed description of the conceptualization and interpretation of the domain and facet scales. The core meanings of low and high scores will be reviewed along with evidence of reliability and validity. Consideration of the basic principles of interpreting the NEO-PI-3 profile of scores frames the remainder of the workshop. Using and Understanding NEO PI-3 Profiles in a number of assessment contexts will be reviewed. Applications of Profile Interpretation in problem formulation and treatment planning follow from basic steps in profile interpretation. Combinations of self-report traits including the ten Personality Style Graphs will be reviewed as well as combining self-reports and Observer ratings. The NEO-PI-3 Interpretive Report will be reviewed and serve as the basis for a number of clinical and forensic case study discussions. Five Selected case studies will be discussed that illustrate the basic interpretative report, combining peer or observer ratings with self-reports. Finally, we will focus on using the NEO-PI-3 profile of scale scores to identify potential problems in living and potential Axis I and II conditions and disorders in clinical and forensic assessment contexts.

Identify the five primary factors of the FFM and summarize their development.<div>Identify the relevant NEO-PI-R test materials and be able to administer and score the test</div><div>Identify the Supplementary NEO materials including NEO Software, Your NEO Summary, NEO Style Graph Booklet, NEO Problems in Living Checklist and the NEO Job Profiler.</div><div>Identify and describe the five broad factors of a client’s characteristic ways of thinking and behavior.Be able to provide basic NEO PI-R profile interpretation.</div><div>Identify potential strengths and potential problems of living from high and low NEO PI-3 scores.</div>
