Course Description

This 6 CE live workshop is for licensed psychologists and mental health professionals interested in police and public safety-related topics. This intermediate-level course is designed to address the Fitness-For-Duty Evaluation (FFDE), its processes, and related topics. Topics covered in this course include, but are not limited to: discussing the difference between pre-employment evaluations and FFDEs; the legal threshold that the employer needs to meet for mandating a fitness examination; the psychologist’s obligation in offering consultation, as well as knowledge of declining a referral that falls outside the area of competency; discussing the examinee’s rights and limitations to access the report and other personal health information; integration of multiple sources of data; the legal standards for determining fitness; and other salient and relevant FFDE related matters.

Course Objectives

Discuss criteria constituting the legal threshold for mandating a fitness for duty evaluation. Explain the relevant clinical and forensic questions of a fitness for duty evaluation. Explain the rationale for evaluators to decline a referral if it falls outside his/her area of expertise. Discuss the examinee’s rights and limitations to access the report and other personal health information. Describe the psycho-legal rationale for providing examinees with appropriate disclosure and informed consent. Discuss issues related to the integration of data in order to produce a coherent and comprehensive report. Describe the legal standard for determining fitness.
