Course Description
This course is designed for those mental health professionals interested in law enforcement occupations and the relative impact of PTSD on the decision-making process of peace officers. This course will cite and explain the relevant research as it relates to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and decision-making processes among police officers. The DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for PTSD are discussed, the common stressors experienced by police officers in the line of duty will be discussed, as well as the prevalence of PTSD in police and other public safety occupations. Various leading research will also be discussed on the 5 stages of decision-making and how trauma and combat exposure contributes to PTSD and impaired decision-making among police and public safety personnel from a neurobiological perspective. Briefly, this course will also discuss the possible implications of the research for mental health professionals to consider when conducting evaluations of peace officers including pre-employment, fitness for duty, and other treatment or interventions.
