Course Description
A review of emerging topics related to assessing public safety personnel: Contending with applicant scarcity, virtual assessments, trends in FFDE assessments, and the detection of bias among candidates.
Course Objectives
Searching for Water in the Desert: Challenges In a Time of Good Applicant Scarcity (1 hour), Jeni McCutcheon, Psy.D., ABPP, Jocelyn Roland, Ph.D., ABPP, Meredith Rimmer, Ph.D., Kyle Hunneke, Psy.D., and Gina Gallivan, Ph.D., ABPP
• Identify two agency challenges related to a lack of quality applicants
• Name two psychology practice challenges related to a lack of quality applicants
• Describe ways to maintain relationships and be of service to agencies during good applicant scarcity
Current Trends in Psychological Fitness For Duty Evaluations (1 hour), Lewis Schlosser, Ph.D., ABPP
• Identify 2 aspects of the philosophical underpinning of the FFDE as a component of officer wellness
• Identify 2 trends in the reasons for FFDE referrals in the 2021 sample when compared to the 2015 sample
• Identify 2 trends in the outcomes of FFDE in the 2021 sample when compared to the 2015 sample
Innovations in Assessment Methodology: Virtual Administration and Evaluation, Ryan Roberts, JD, PhD and Mike Roberts, PhD, ABPP (1 hour)
• Discuss the validity of virtual test proctoring.
• Describe the challenge of maintaining psychological records in a remote assessment practice.
Investigating Bias Among Public Safety Applicants: A review of base rates, behavioral correlates, and psychological test correlates, Ryan Roberts, JD, PhD and Mike Roberts, PhD, ABPP (1 hour)
• Discuss the challenges faced by screening psychologists when assessing applicant bias.
• List behavioral correlates of biased beliefs.
• Discuss the challenges of establishing validity of an explicit bias measure.
