Course Description
A review of new topics in police and public safety psychological assessment.
Course Objectives
PRESENTATION: Maintaining HIPAA Compliance and Confidentiality in the Era of Remote Pre-employment Assessment. 9:00am – 10:00am
· Describe threats to confidentiality related to virtual test administration.
· Describe appropriate procedures for maintaining confidentiality when conducting virtual psychological interviews.
PRESENTATION: A Review of the POST Guidance Related to Bias (Amended 1031(f)). 10:00am – 11:00am
· Explain the requirements of amended 1031(f) as it relates to the screening of candidates for bias.
· Describe the difference between implicit and explicit bias.
· List 3 potential sources of data that are relevant to the assessment of explicit bias.
PRESENTATION: Investigating Bias and its Correlates in the Police Applicant Population 11:00am – 1:00pm
· Describe historical efforts to assess bias in the social science literature.
· Describe the unique challenges of assessing bias in a job applicant population.
· List psychological test correlates of endorsing explicitly biased beliefs.
PRESENTATION: Writing Effective Reports for Public Safety Pre-Employment Assessments: Addressing Bias. 1:00pm – 2:00pm
· Explain the relationship between the current POST dimensions and the legal mandate to assess bias.
· Describe how an assessment of explicit and implicit bias can be effectively communicated in a psychological report.
· List behaviors, circumstances or professed beliefs that may be mitigating factors to data indicating potential bias.
PRESENTATION: The Utility of Dynamic Questionnaires for Assessing Law Enforcement Candidates. 2:00pm – 3:00pm
· List two ways in which dynamic questionnaires may provide more useful information for conducting pre-employment assessments.
· Discuss the merits of asking dynamically triggered follow up questions immediately after a flagged response, or waiting until the candidate has completed all questions before requiring follow up responses.
