Course Description

This 4-hour CE Course is approved for 1 hour of POST CPE.

The purpose of the workshop is to help clinicians recognize the social problem of racism that has emerged systemically in our police system. Racism has caused distress in the lives of people of color psychologically and emotionally. Systemic and structural racism are societal problems impacting and affecting the lives of people of color. Racism is tied to structural and individual bias that allows racism to play as a gatekeeping function in how other systems, like the police system, interact with people of color.

This course will provide psychologists with information relevant to assessing a candidate's ability to interact with and understand potential reactions from individuals who have had negative encounters with the police.

Course Objectives

  • Attendees will be able to summarize the history of how systemic and structural racism entered into our police system.
  • Attendees will be able to define how trauma factors into how a person will behaviorally respond when interacting with the police system.
  • Attendees will able to list solutions to consider when working with clients who need emergency assistance or need to follow-up regarding a non-strength base interaction with police.
  • Attendees will able to explain strategies to counteract tense racial interaction and solutions to advise the community
