Continuing Professional Training and Perishable Skills

  1. Purpose

    1-1.Continuing Professional Training (CPT), Advanced Officer Course, and Perishable Skills

    This Commission procedure provides the recommended CPT topics, Advanced Officer Course requirements, and alternative methods for satisfying the CPT/Perishable Skills requirement. In accordance with Regulation 1052, the content, testing, and instructional methodology requirements for the perishable skills required by Regulation 1005(d) shall be met from the following:
    • Tactical Firearms 
    • Driver Training/Awareness 
    • Arrest & Control 
    • Strategic Communications 
    • Use of Force 
  2. CPT Topics and Advanced Officer Course Requirements

    2-2.Recommended CPT Topics and Advanced Officer Requirements

    The Commission recommends the following topics be considered for CPT, but not required, for officers assigned to enforcement duties:
    • New Laws
    • Recent Court Decisions and/or Search and Seizure Refresher
    • Officer Survival Techniques
    • New Concepts, Procedures, Technology
    • Discretionary Decision Making (Practical Field Problems)
    • Civil Liability‑Causing Subjects
    • Ethics
    The Advanced Officer Courses shall consist of time blocks of not less than two hours each, regardless of the subject matter, with an overall minimum of no less than 24 hours. The maximum time period for presenting an Advanced Officer Course is 180 days. Completion of an Advanced Officer Course satisfies the Continuing Professional Training requirement.
  3. 3-3.Non POST-Certified Courses

    The successful completion of the following non POST-certified courses satisfies the CPT requirement:

    Traffic Accident Reconstruction 2 Northwestern University Public Safety Center
    School of Police Staff and Command Northwestern University Public Safety Center
    Senior Managers Leadership Program Northwestern University Public Safety Center
    Senior Management Institute for Police Police Executive Research Forum (PERF)
