Regular Basic Course
The Regular Basic Course (RBC) is the entry-level training requirement for many California peace officers. The RBC Curriculum is divided into 42 individual topics, called Learning Domains. The Learning Domains contain the minimum required foundational information for given subjects, which are detailed in the Training and Testing Specification for Peace Officer Basic Courses. A separate workbook is available for each domain. To view a current list of student workbooks please visit:
PC 832 Arrest and Firearms Course
The PC 832 Arrest and Firearms Course (PC 832 Course) is the minimum training standard for California peace officers. All peace officers are required to complete this course prior to exercising the powers of a peace officer. This training may be met by successful completion of a basic training course (e.g., Regular Basic Course, Specialized Investigators' Basic Course or the Module III of the Regular Basic Course - Modular Format) or as a separate stand-alone certified course. The PC 832 student workbook is divided into 5 volumes. A separate Workbook is available for each volume. To view a current list of student workbooks please visit:
Modular Format
The Modular Format of the RBC is delivered in a three-part instructional sequence that coincides with the three California reserve peace officer levels. The minimum requirement is 727 hours, allowing necessary redundancy of instruction in critical skill areas due to the three-part sequence that can be taken over an extended period of time. Module III student workbooks are divided into 19 Learning Domains. Module II student workbooks are divided into 17 Learning Domains. Module I student workbooks are divided into 27 Learning Domains. Specialized Investigators' Basic Course
The Specialized Investigators' Basic Course (SIBC) is the entry-level training requirement for some California investigators. The SIBC curriculum is divided into 38 individual topics, called Learning Domains. Four of these domains are specific to the SIBC; the remainders are common with the RBC. A separate workbook is available for each domain. To view a current list of student workbooks please visit:
Requalification Course
The Requalification Course meets the requalification requirement for individuals who have successfully completed a POST-certified Regular or Specialized Investigators' Basic Course, the Basic Course Waiver (BCW) process, or who have been awarded a POST Basic Certificate and have a three-year or longer break in service. The Requalification Curriculum is divided into 28 individual topics, called Learning Domains. A separate workbook is available for each domain.
