Peace Officer

Required Training

All California Law Enforcement personnel with an active POST appointment may now instantly check their POST Continuing Professional Training (CPT) and Perishable Skills (PS) training status.

Training requirements and training resources.

Courses that meet some mandates are available on the POST Learning Portal and Training DVDs.

Basic Training

  • Basic Course — The Regular Basic Course (basic academy) is the training standard for police officers, deputy sheriffs, school district police officers, district attorney investigators, as well as a few other classifications of peace officers.
  • Basic Training Academies — Academies throughout California present POST-certified basic law enforcement training.

Field Training Program (FTP) / Police Training Program (PTP)

Agencies can select either the FTP or PTP POST-approved patrol training programs. Both FTP and PTP facilitate a peace officer’s transition from the Regular Basic Course (Academy), or custody assignment, to performing general uniformed patrol duties. Each program introduces newly-assigned peace officers to agency personnel, policies, and procedures.

Investigators / Detective

Required training and training resources available for Investigators / Detectives.

Reserve Peace Officer Program (RPOP)

The California Reserve Peace Officer Program (RPOP) is composed of members of our society who choose to dedicate a portion of their time to community service by working as part-time employees or volunteers with law enforcement agencies.

Supervision

Required training and training resources available for Peace Officer's in the Supervisor role.
